This year we have three crews undertaking the daunting DW! Csaba Ivanics is racing in the Senior Singles, Stephen Plant and Attila Pasztor in the Junior Doubles and Duncan and Lauren Hanton in the Junior Vet class.
Paddlers and support crews were all up at the crack of dawn this morning to get down to the water for an early start. Unfortunately, we were greeted with the news that there had been a police incident on the canal, which caused a delay to the start of the race. A few hours, lots of cups of hot chocolate and a few hot cross buns later, the crews finally made it on to the water!
All of the crews got off to a good start, passing Pewsey in good time. However, as always in DW, it wasn’t a completely smooth ride. Csaba had some trouble with another boat in the tunnel that caused him to lose time, and later suffered a wrist injury. Stephen and Attila also had a calamity when the rudder on their boat snapped. They had to run with the boat for a mile and a half before a replacement could be found!
Thankfully all of the issues were ironed out by the end of the day, with all three crews making it over the line. Csaba even felt that the race was too short and fancied another mile!
Csaba – 5 hrs 50 mins 11 secs
Stephen and Attila – 6 hrs 37 mins 15 secs
Duncan and Lauren – 6 hrs 58 mins 23 secs
Csaba will be starting in the fastest 15 tomorrow.
